History

1959
Federation of Agencies Serving the Handicapped formed in Tarrant County.

1961
Federation published study "The Handicapped Children of Fort Worth and Tarrant County" which recommended the creation of the Child Study Center (CSC). Larry D. Eason was named the first Executive Director of the CSC and began its organization

CSC was funded by the United Way of Tarrant County.

1962
CSC Diagnostic Clinic saw its first patient in June, in facilities provided by Fort Worth Children's Hospital (now Cook Children's Medical Center).

1966
Present building occupied in October 1, 1966 by six autonomous agencies:

CSC Diagnostic Clinic (now called Pediatric Department)
Child Guidance Clinic (now called Psychology Department)
Retarded Children's Association
United Cerebral Palsy Association
Blind Children's Service Center
Branch Unit of Easter Seal Society
Dental Clinic established.

1967
CSC Auxiliary founded with Mrs. Jane C. Justin as the original
President of the Auxiliary.

1969
Sid W. Richardson Auditorium added to building.

1970
Four schools operated by Retarded Children's Association, United Cerebral Palsy, Blind Children's Service Center and Child Guidance Clinic merged into one school and operated by the CSC.

1971
Stephen G. Maddox, M.D., hired as Clinical Director.

1972
Implemented a Special Education Program for emotionally disturbed children.

1975
Received accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in both its Developmental Disabilities and Emotionally Disturbed Children's divisions.

1976
Collaborated with Head Start to provide consultation in speech and education and diagnostic evaluations to children at risk for developmental disabilities.

1977
Initiated Genetics Clinic at the CSC in cooperation with the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Genetic Screening and Counseling Service.

1978
Initiated the "High Risk Infant" Program, known as the Child Development Program.

1980
Received support from the United Ways of Johnson and Denton Counties.

1981
Established Endowment Fund.

1982
Transferred all the children's services provided by Easter Seal Society along with 17 employees to the CSC.

1986
In cooperation with Chi Omega and Gill Children's Services, allowed expansion of dental services to include typically developing indigent children with dental problems.

1987
Added ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) evaluation for infants suspected of having a hearing loss.

Developed Parent Education programs.

1989
CSC School became accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

1991
Stephen G. Maddox, M.D. retired, and Robert Van Dervoort, M.D. was named Clinical Director.

1992
CSC school accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs.
oInitiated CONNECTIONS/Collaboration with Fort Worth public schools and several other community agencies creating a model to provide health and social services within at-risk elementary schools.

1993
Construction began on major expansion and renovation of the original building.

1995
Opening celebrations held for completion of the building construction. The project included a new second floor addition and the remodeling of the first floor.

The first annual Children's Golf Classic was held to benefit the Patient Care Fund.

Began the operation of the Extended School Program (ESP) to provide before and after school care for students enrolled in the Center's therapeutic school program and summer programming.

1996
CSC offered its first community-wide seminar for parents and professionals to address concerns about children with learning disabilities.

1998
Larry D. Eason, founding executive director of CSC, retired after a 37-year career.

Frank R. Brown, III Ph.D., M.D., assumed responsibilities of President/CEO and Medical Director.

Babies First! program began as part of the CONNECTIONS/Collaboration, with emphasis on a child's brain development and the importance of prenatal care and stimulation during the first three years of a child's life.

The CSC Foundation was formed to provide asset management oversight, as well as raise and manage charitable funds for the benefit and support of the Child Study Center.

Frank R. Brown, III, Ph.D., M.D., resigned due to health reasons.

1999
Joyce Elizabeth Mauk, M.D., was appointed CSC President/CEO and Medical Director.

Libby Dotson was appointed the first President of the CSC Foundation.

CONNECTIONS/Collaboration program expanded to nineteen at risk elementary schools.

CSC was approved as a United Way supported agency in Hood County.

The NIGrads (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates) Follow-Up Clinic became a part of the CSC.

2000
Boys Town USA® social skills and classroom management curriculum was implemented at the CSC School.

Neuropsychology services added to treatment options.

Creation of financial aid program at CSC School.

2002
Applied Behavior Analysis program added to help children with developmental disabilities displaying difficult behavior learn appropriate behavior and skills.

Strategic plan adopted refocusing services offered at the Child Study Center on the agency's mission of serving children with developmental disabilities; CONNECTIONS / Collaboration program transitioned to another community agency and dental clinic's focus became children with developmental disabilites.
