Psychology
The psychology staff provides expert diagnosis and treatment to children from birth through 21 years of age with developmental differences. Areas of expertise include:
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Autistic spectrum disorders
Behavioral disorders
Developmental delay
Developmental difficulties associated with syndromes and other developmental differences
Learning disabilities
Mental retardation
Parenting problems
Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations include comprehensive review of historical information and school records, testing of intellectual and academic functional levels, behavioral observations, and psychiatric symptom interviews. Recommendations may be made for further testing, school, and behavioral interventions or therapies. Many therapeutic interventions such as psychotherapy, social skills training, and parent education workshops are available through the department. Members of the psychology department also provide consultative services to children in the Child Study Center School.
Early identification and treatment are vital to improving the quality of life for a child with a developmental disability. The long-term effects of developmental disorders can impact every area of life. The Psychology Clinic strives to help each child reach his or her potential and enjoy a happy and productive life.
