Bringing Potential to Light

Founded in 1962, the CSC is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.

 Child Study Center Turns 50
Minimize

Almost fifty years ago, our founding committee members envisioned a medical and diagnostic facility for children with developmental disabilities. The group, chaired by Robert W. Decker, incorporated itself as the Child Study Center and opened its doors to see its first patient in June of 1962. Almost a half century later, the Center is still one of the few renowned facilities in the nation offering multiple services to children with developmental disabilities under one roof.

The Child Study Center has made many milestones along the way.  In 1967, the Center implemented an educational facility for children with special needs. Just a few years later, a Special Education Program for emotionally disturbed children, an Auditory Brainstem Response evaluation for infants suspected of having a hearing loss, and much-needed parent education programs were developed.  With the help of Mrs. Jane C. Justin and the auxiliary, a volunteer force was engaged to support the programs of the Center.

In 1995, the Child Study Center celebrated the completion of building construction which included a second floor addition, allowing the Center to expand operations and services even further. The NIGrads (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates) Follow-Up Clinic became a part of the Center,  as well as the creation of the neuropsychology services.

In 2002, the Applied Behavior Analysis program - an intensive program for Behavioral Analysis in Autism – was added. To date, this program has improved the lives of more than 150 children, including many of whom have transitioned into the Jane Justin School at Child Study Center.

The year 2012 will be a time to celebrate, reminiscence and continue forward with a vision set forth by the founding committee members. The Child Study Center is planning a year filled with celebrations to commemorate fifty years of serving children and bringing their potential to light.
